Air Cadet Banquet for 500

Regina Leader Post - October 1962

Some 500 air cadets, parents and guests gathered at the Trianon Ballroom Monday night for the first joint Regina Air Cadet League banquet of the three squadrons.
Attending were members of Squadrons 34, 41 and 703.

“The turnout tonight is evidence of the parents interest in their sons and the air cadet league, said Group Capt. J. A. Stephens, commanding officer of RCAF Station Moose Jaw.

“The air cadet story began in the war days of 1939-40 when young men desired to serve their country. The purpose of the organization then was to give young men below the age of 18 an early training,” he said.

Following the war, the commanding officer said the air cadet league continued to grow but with the purpose of training young men to be better citizens in the community, province and nation.

The Air Cadet League of Canada increased its membership over 1961 by 30 per cent. It now includes 25,000 cadets.

Uniforms for the groups are provided by the RCAF, along with training plans and personnel. Each local league is directed by a group of local citizens.

Each year, cadets with above average standings are awarded opportunities to compete with other Canadian cadets for exchange visits abroad. This year Danny Morrow and Chris Snelgrove, both of Regina, were awarded trips to Tel Aviv, and United States, respectively.

Awards were presented at the banquet to Ronald Harbottle, Barry Price, Leo Lammers, Brian Swystun and Ronald Tolhurst.
Following the banquet, A. K. Gillmore, executive director of the Wascana Centre Authority showed a selection of slides on the Wascana Development.

Chairman for the evening was Harold Humberstone, chairman of the Regina Air Cadet League, and guests included Mayor Henry Baker, Lt-Cmdr. J. M. Wise of HMCS Queen, and Lt. Col J. Sinclair of 20 Militia Group.
